Wedding Day Poems Hiring a Poet for the Wedding Vows

Including wedding day poems in the wedding vows can be a wonderful thing for couples to do. Not everyone can just think of a poem right off of the top of their heads, however, and some couples would rather not use classic poetry that has probably already been used at many other weddings. One thing that couples can do is actually hire a poet to create unique and personal wedding day poems for both the bride and the groom, or even a wedding day poem that the bride and the groom can recite together.

Although it can be hard to find poets who advertise that they will do wedding day poems, there are ways that a couple can hire one. The first thing that a couple can do is visit places that host poetry readings on a regular basis. A couple can attend one or two of these poetry readings and see if there is a particular poet there who they think could write the right kind of wedding poetry for them. The next thing to do, of course, is approach the poet with the request. Highly popular and well-published poets may not have the time or the inclination to write wedding poetry for couples, but there are several amateur poets that do readings who are good at what they do and might be the perfect choice for a couple. If a poet agrees to write wedding poetry for a couple, then the next thing that they need to talk about is price. Hiring someone to write wedding poetry can be a rather gray area when it comes to price, but couples should probably expect to pay anywhere from $100 to $1000, depending on the popularity of the poet or the type of poetry that the couple wants written. Of course, you can also find someone who might possibly want to do this for free, but unless he is your friend then it is very unlikely that he is a professional.

A couple may feel more comfortable if the bride hires a female poet to write poetry to include in her wedding vows, and the groom hires a male poet for his vows. This isn’t necessary, but it may be something that the couple feels more comfortable doing. The bride can work directly with her poet and the groom can work directly with his.

The couple will want to work closely with the poet or poets to make sure that the wedding day poems are exactly what they want. Though a poet needs some literary license in order to do good work, the couple should still set some guidelines. For instance, if the couple is very religious they may want to make sure that the poems contain many religious references. Or, the couple may want the poet to reference other things in the poetry, such as how they met or how they became engaged. The couple should create a rough outline for the poet, saying what they would like mentioned in the poems and what feelings they would like to express. A good poet will be able to incorporate all the things that the couple wants in the poetry and make it personal and meaningful. Couples should also not expect the poet to get the poems perfect the first time, either. Getting the poetry just right will probably take some trial and error, and some give and take between the couple and their hired poet or poets. The end result should be something that everyone is happy with, and that reflects the couples’ unique separate qualities as well as how they feel about each other and their marriage.
